Weir High Softball Dominates City Championship Game

The Weir High softball team showcased their offensive prowess in a dominant performance against city-rival Madonna in the annual City Championship Game. Weir High secured a 15-0 victory in just four innings, thanks to a stellar batting display that included 13 hits, including two home runs.

Head coach John Leary attributed the team’s success to the warmer weather, stating, “The kids like the warm weather. All three days we were in Tennessee, the weather was not great. I think a couple of days it was warmer here than down there except there was no rain and thank God for that.”

All 12 players who batted for Weir High reached safely or had an RBI, showcasing the team’s depth and offensive firepower. The Red Riders scored in every inning they batted, displaying consistency and dominance throughout the game.

Madonna’s head coach, Jason Backel, acknowledged Weir High’s strength, stating, “They are powerful one through nine. They are No. 2 in the state for a reason. They smash the ball. They have a very good pitcher. All their outfielders can flat out fly. They are a good team.”

The victory was a matter of pride for the Weir High team, as the City Championship Game holds significant importance due to the longstanding rivalry between the two schools. The team’s performance was highlighted by standout players such as Kylie Dean, who delivered a single, a home run, and four RBI, and Eliza Utt, who pitched a strong game and contributed offensively with a single, a double, and two RBI.

With this impressive win, Weir High looks ahead to upcoming games with confidence, while Madonna aims to bounce back from the defeat and improve their performance in the games to come. The intense rivalry between the two schools adds an extra layer of excitement to future matchups, promising more thrilling softball action in the days ahead.
