City of Syracuse promotes Kate Auwaerter

Kate Auwaerter has been appointed as the new preservation planner in the office of zoning administration in the City of Syracuse’s Department of Neighborhood and Business Development. Mayor Ben Walsh made the announcement, highlighting Auwaerter’s extensive experience in historic preservation and planning.

Auwaerter, who previously served as the city’s preservation planner and public art coordinator for 15 years, will now be responsible for managing the implementation of the city’s preservation program and overseeing historic preservation efforts. She will also provide assistance to the Syracuse Landmark Preservation Board and administer the city’s certified local government program.

With over 25 years of experience in the field, Auwaerter has held positions at organizations such as the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, the New York Main Street Alliance, and the Downtown Committee of Syracuse. She holds a master’s degree in historic preservation planning from Cornell University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Oberlin College.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Auwaerter is actively involved in the community, serving as president and board member of the Thornden Park Association and as a board member of the Syracuse Parks Conservancy.

The establishment of the preservation planner role as a full-time position reflects the city’s commitment to preserving its historic landmarks and promoting responsible development. The city is currently in the process of hiring a new public art coordinator to continue supporting the cultural vibrancy of Syracuse.
