The Rappahannock Area YMCA is set to host the inaugural “Calloway Classic” this Saturday in honor of the late Bob Calloway, a beloved tennis coach known for his dedication to his students and colleagues. The event will take place at the Massad Family YMCA in Stafford County and will feature Calloway’s favorite sports: tennis, squash, and pickleball.
Calloway, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 73, spent over 38 years teaching and coaching in Fredericksburg. He was a highly respected figure in the community, known for his passion for sports and commitment to his players. His coaching career included 30 years of coaching boys tennis, during which his teams achieved remarkable success, winning three state championships and numerous district and regional titles.
In addition to his coaching achievements, Calloway was also instrumental in introducing new sports to his students, such as pickleball, which has since become one of the fastest-growing sports in America. His impact extended beyond the tennis court, as he mentored other coaches and played a key role in organizing various community events and races.
The “Calloway Classic” will not only celebrate Calloway’s legacy but also raise funds for the Gwyneth’s Gift Foundation, which focuses on promoting CPR education and access to defibrillators. The event promises to be a fitting tribute to a coach who left a lasting impact on the lives of many in the community.
