The Class of 2024 at Campbell University celebrated a significant milestone on Saturday as they received their undergraduate degrees after navigating through the challenges of a global pandemic during their freshman year.
The students were faced with the sudden shift to remote learning and isolation just as they were settling into their college experience. Despite the obstacles, they showed resilience and determination, which was acknowledged and celebrated during the Spring Commencement ceremonies.
Dean Locklear, a pre-law and political science graduate and outgoing president of the Student Government Association, reflected on the tumultuous journey the class had endured over the past four years. He highlighted the unity, togetherness, and respect that the class demonstrated in the face of adversity.
The commencement ceremonies saw approximately 500 graduates walking the stage to receive their degrees, representing a variety of disciplines including arts, sciences, business, health, and engineering.
The keynote speaker, Shirley Hoogstra, president of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities, shared valuable life lessons with the graduates, emphasizing the importance of learning from mistakes, showing kindness, and persisting with passion.
Among the graduates was Emma Shaw, who found her passion for biology during her time at Campbell, and Savionna Hardie, a first-generation college student who overcame challenges to reach this milestone.
The Class of 2024’s graduation serves as a testament to their strength, resilience, and ability to overcome obstacles, setting them on a path towards a bright and promising future.
