LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Clippers have secured their future by signing coach Tyronn Lue to a long-term contract after a successful season that saw them clinch a division title.
Clippers President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank made the announcement on Wednesday, without disclosing specific details of the deal. However, ESPN reported that Lue’s new contract is valued at around $14 million annually through the 2028-29 season, citing unnamed sources.
Frank praised Lue, stating, “T Lue is everything we want in a head coach. He’s a brilliant tactician and a natural leader with an extraordinary ability to connect with those around him, both players and staff. There’s no one we’d rather have coach our team.”
Lue has had a successful tenure with the Clippers, posting a record of 184-134 in four seasons, including three postseason appearances and a trip to the Western Conference finals in 2021. The team finished with a 51-31 record last season and secured the Pacific Division title for the third time in franchise history.
Having previously coached the Cleveland Cavaliers to an NBA title in 2016, Lue has proven his coaching prowess. He took over as head coach of the Clippers after serving as an assistant on Doc Rivers’ staff and has now solidified his place as the leader of the team for years to come.
“This is where I want to be. I’ve loved coaching this team for the past four years and I’m excited to head into a new era at Intuit Dome,” Lue said.
With Lue’s leadership and the team’s recent success, the Clippers are poised for continued success in the seasons ahead.
