Club Sports at UNM: Bringing the World Together

Club Sports at the University of New Mexico (UNM) are providing students with the opportunity to stay active and competitive in sports while balancing the demands of college life. With over a dozen different Club Sports available, students have a wide range of options to choose from, whether they are looking for a recreational or competitive experience.

Club Sports Project Assistant Jessica Bennett and Club Sports Coordinator Specialist Victoria Crawford-Perez are at the helm of this thriving program, overseeing a variety of sports teams ranging from soccer to lacrosse to mountaineering. With an estimated 1,100 students participating in Club Sports in some capacity, the program is a vibrant and integral part of the UNM community.

One standout team within the Club Sports program is the Lobo Hockey team, which has qualified for the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) National Tournament multiple times. Despite not being NCAA-affiliated, the team competes at a high level and is aiming to advance to a higher division in the near future.

In addition to the physical and competitive benefits of participating in Club Sports, students also gain valuable skills in leadership, teamwork, and time management. The program is entirely student-run, allowing students to take ownership of their sports teams and create a sense of community within the university.

With the opportunity to try out different sports at events like Club Sports Day, students have the chance to explore new interests and stay active while forming lasting friendships.
