Coconino County: Protecting the Night Sky

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Coconino County Recognized as a Dark Skies Champion

Coconino County has been recognized as a Dark Skies Champion for its commitment to preserving and protecting the natural beauty of the night sky. With some of the darkest skies in the country, the county has enacted lighting ordinances over 45 years ago to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the wonders of the universe.

District 1 Coconino County Supervisor Patrice Horstman emphasized the importance of dark skies, stating that they offer spiritual sustenance and are integral to the culture and values of the county. Partnerships with organizations like the City of Flagstaff, Lowell Observatory, the Navajo Nation, and the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition have allowed for educational, scientific, and stargazing opportunities for locals and visitors alike.

The county’s efforts to reduce light pollution and maintain dark skies have not only benefited the environment but have also created economic opportunities and a thriving astro-tourism industry. By promoting the value of dark skies through educational materials and public events like the Celebration of the Night and Flagstaff Star Party, Coconino County is raising awareness and encouraging the community to “Help Defend the Dark.”

For their dedication to preserving the beauty of the night sky, the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition has recognized Coconino County as a Dark Skies Champion. Through partnerships, education, and public outreach, the county is working towards maintaining a truly out-of-this-world environment for all to enjoy.
