Collaborative Efforts Among Women in a Rwandan Reconciliation Village Offer Hope for Unity

In the heart of Bugesera, Rwanda, a remarkable story of friendship and reconciliation is unfolding between two women who have overcome the horrors of the past to build a peaceful coexistence in their community.

Anastasie Nyirabashyitsi and Jeanette Mukabyagaju, both witnesses to the atrocities of the Rwandan genocide, have found solace and friendship in each other’s company. Their bond was solidified in 2007 when Mukabyagaju, a Tutsi survivor, entrusted her child to Nyirabashyitsi, a Hutu woman, for the first time since they had known each other. This act of trust was a powerful symbol of reconciliation in a country still healing from the wounds of the past.

Nyirabashyitsi, haunted by the memories of helpless Tutsis facing imminent death during the genocide, and Mukabyagaju, who survived by hiding in a latrine for two months, have found common ground in their shared experiences. They now live side by side in Mbyo Reconciliation Village, a community of genocide perpetrators and survivors, where they work together on projects that promote unity and forgiveness.
