Columbia Board of Education greenlights Phase 1 of attendance area adjustments

The Columbia Board of Education made a significant decision during a special session on Wednesday, approving a new elementary school attendance area change that will impact 59 students. The measure, which passed 5-1 with one abstention, will move these students from Fairview Elementary to Russell Boulevard, feeding Fairview Elementary into two schools instead of three. The new attendance area will not be implemented until the 2025-26 school year.

During the meeting, board members debated various options for over an hour, with most in support of the approved option. However, Boardmember April Ferrao expressed concerns about the district needing to consider the changes more holistically. Boardmember Paul Harper also raised concerns about rushing into the process, emphasizing the importance of giving parents and students enough time to process the changes.

One parent, Liz Goebel, who has three children attending Columbia Public Schools, expressed gratitude for the board’s consideration of families and staff members in pushing back the implementation of the changes. The decision was made to allow for adequate time to prepare for the shifts in school attendance lines.

The approved change represents Phase 1 of a three-phase redrawing of school attendance lines, with options for Phases 2 and 3 expected to be presented to the community in the coming weeks. The board also briefly discussed the possibility of grandfathering in students, but decided to hold off on further discussions until Phases 2 and 3 are addressed. Overall, the board’s decision aims to balance the need for change with the importance of maintaining community cohesion and allowing families time to adjust to the upcoming shifts.
