Columbus High Girls Tennis Team Concludes Season at State Tournament
The Columbus High girls tennis team wrapped up their 2024 season at the Class A state meet held at Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln on Thursday. Despite their efforts, the team finished with an overall record of 1-4 at the tournament.
One highlight of the meet was the performance of the No. 1 doubles team consisting of senior Taylor Loontjer and sophomore Carley Kapels. The duo, seeded 14th, secured the team’s lone victory by defeating Kennedy Alwine and Layne Parker from Bellevue East with a score of 8-2.
However, Loontjer and Kapels faced a tough challenge in their next match against Millard North’s Lucy Cho and Apoorva Kasireddy, ultimately losing 6-0, 6-0. Despite the loss, coach Kim Leibhart praised their efforts, stating that they had been playing well leading up to the tournament.
With the conclusion of the state meet, Loontjer’s tennis career at CHS also came to an end. Leibhart commended Loontjer for her leadership and growth throughout her time on the team, highlighting her journey from junior varsity to the top of the ladder.
Additionally, the No. 2 doubles team of seniors Maggie Luebbe and Sage Warner put up a strong fight against Fremont’s Kiersten Dockerty and Madison Schmidt but ultimately fell short with a score of 8-2. Warner and Luebbe’s season record stood at 8-9, with Leibhart acknowledging their improvement and competitive spirit.
Overall, the Columbus High girls tennis team showcased determination and skill at the state tournament, with Leibhart expressing pride in their performance and dedication throughout the season.
