House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) has spoken out against Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) motion to vacate against Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), calling it an inappropriate business model. Comer made his comments in an interview with Fox News’s Martha MacCallum, where he expressed his support for Johnson remaining as Speaker.

Greene has been vocal in her criticism of Johnson, particularly in relation to his efforts to provide additional aid to Ukraine. She filed the motion to vacate against Johnson in late March and has garnered support from at least three GOP co-sponsors. Despite Greene’s push for a change in leadership, Comer emphasized the importance of stability within the Speaker’s office.

Comer also addressed the recent foreign spending package introduced by Johnson, which includes provisions for aid to Ukraine. While acknowledging the importance of supporting Ukraine, Comer expressed his opposition to the aid provisions, citing concerns about taxpayer dollars and the need to prioritize domestic issues.

The pressure on Johnson to pass additional aid for Ukraine has been met with resistance from some conservatives, who question the allocation of funds. Comer highlighted the need to focus on domestic priorities, such as border security, while also expressing hope for Ukraine’s success in its conflict with Russia.

As the debate over Ukraine aid continues, the House Republican Conference faces internal divisions over the direction of its leadership and policy priorities. Comer’s comments reflect a broader debate within the party about the best approach to foreign aid and national security issues.
