Craig Bowler, a Commonwealth Games medallist from Buckinghamshire, has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the International Bowls for the Disabled (IBD) World Championships due to a lack of funding. Representing England in para bowling at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Bowler was selected to compete in the upcoming tournament in South Africa but faced a cost of about £3,000 to participate.

Disability Bowls England (DBE) expressed their financial constraints, stating that funding a team for the championship would “bankrupt” the organization. Despite his disappointment, Bowler prioritized his family’s needs over his own sporting ambitions, choosing not to pay for the trip.

Bowler, who lost both his legs and an arm in a tragic incident, found solace and purpose in playing bowls after his recovery. His determination and positive outlook on life led him to success, winning a bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

DBE chairperson Steve Watson highlighted the challenges faced by the charity in securing funding, relying solely on personal donations and grants to support their programs. The organization made the tough decision to prioritize their ongoing initiatives over funding the team for the world championships.

Despite the setback, Bowler remains optimistic and grateful for the opportunities he has had, emphasizing the importance of support for athletes with disabilities in pursuing their sporting dreams.
