Competition watchdog in UK expresses ‘serious worries’ about dominance of big tech companies in AI sector

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has raised concerns about the dominance of big tech companies in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) market. The CMA is particularly focused on the new breed of powerful AI tools known as foundation models, which include text and image generators like ChatGPT.

According to the CMA, there is an “interconnected web” of AI partnerships involving major tech firms such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and Nvidia. Sarah Cardell, the chief executive of the CMA, expressed real concerns about the market power and potential exploitation by these companies.

The CMA highlighted the significant influence these tech giants have in the digital market, with strong positions in computing power and access to skilled employees. This could lead to reduced competition, lower quality, and higher prices for consumers, as well as hinder innovation and economic benefits from AI.

The watchdog emphasized the need to learn from past experiences in digital markets where a small number of powerful platforms emerged due to “winner takes all dynamics.” The CMA is determined to prevent a similar scenario in the AI market, which it considers a “pivotal moment” in the emergence of transformative technology.

While recognizing the resources and innovation capabilities of these tech giants, the CMA stressed the importance of ensuring fair competition and preventing powerful firms from being insulated from competition. The watchdog is already reviewing partnerships like Microsoft’s multi-billion dollar deal with OpenAI to address these concerns.
