Completion of US pier for Gaza nears, but aid delivery may face delays

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The construction of a temporary port facility in Gaza, built by the US military as part of a humanitarian aid effort, is nearing completion despite poor weather conditions in the region. The port, which is set to facilitate the delivery of much-needed aid to the war-torn area, has been a major project for the American military and its allies in the Middle East.

White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby announced that the aid pier is almost ready for operation, with US soldiers overseeing the construction as part of a Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore operation. However, Kirby also noted that weather concerns in the eastern Mediterranean could potentially delay the start of aid deliveries.

Deputy Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh confirmed that the floating pier has been fully constructed and set up, with work on the causeway connecting it to the Gaza shore currently in progress. While the initial target for aid delivery was early May, a specific date for the start of humanitarian goods flowing into Gaza has not yet been determined.

The construction of the aid pier was announced by President Biden during his State of the Union speech in March, in response to growing dissatisfaction with his administration’s handling of the situation in Gaza. Protests in support of Palestine on American campuses have further highlighted the urgency of providing humanitarian aid to the region.

The Israel-Hamas conflict, which began last October, has resulted in the deaths of over 30,000 people in Gaza, predominantly women and children. The ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis underscore the importance of timely aid delivery to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the conflict.
