Concerns raised over CBE’s new Education Plan for 2024-27 and its impact on growth

Calgary public schools are gearing up to launch a new education plan this fall after surveying nearly 10,000 stakeholders on their priorities for K-12 learning. The plan, set for 2024-27, aims to address academic success and student well-being, focusing on learning excellence, student well-being, and Truth and Reconciliation, including diversity and inclusion.

However, concerns have been raised by parents and school board trustees regarding whether the new plan adequately addresses classroom complexity, equity, and access to technology. With historic challenges around growth and limited resources, the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) faces a pressing need to ensure that the plan meets the needs of all students.

The plan emphasizes literacy, math, fair assessments, and providing more learning opportunities to prepare students for future success. It also includes creating targeted programs to support students socio-emotionally, professional development for staff, and a focus on academic success for Indigenous students.

Despite the efforts outlined in the plan, trustees are questioning whether it adequately addresses the growing complexity in classrooms, historic enrollment growth, and the need for more resources to support students with diverse needs. The plan will be up for final approval after trustees debate its effectiveness next week.
