Dubai has set its sights on becoming home to the world’s largest airport terminal with the commencement of construction at Al Maktoum International Airport. The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, announced the ambitious project with an estimated cost of nearly $35 billion.

Once completed, the new terminal is expected to handle up to 260 million passengers annually, making it the largest in the world. Sheikh Mohammed described it as having “the world’s largest capacity” and being “five times larger than the current Dubai International Airport.”

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and CEO of Emirates, stated that the initial phase of the project will be completed within a decade, with a capacity to serve 150 million passengers annually. The airport will serve as the new base for flagship carrier Emirates, its low-cost counterpart Flydubai, and all airline partners facilitating global connections to and from Dubai.

Located on the outskirts of the city, Al Maktoum Airport aims to replace Dubai International Airport, which is limited in its expansion due to its central location. Authorities hope that the new terminal will attract a significant portion of Dubai’s air traffic and solidify the city’s position as a global aviation hub.

With this ambitious project underway, Dubai is set to make a mark on the world stage as it builds the largest airport terminal to cater to the growing demands of air travel in the region.
