Consumer confidence in current business conditions has taken a sharp decline in the first quarter of 2024, according to the latest Business and Consumer Confidence Survey presented by Don Anderson, head of Market Research Services Limited. Only 10.3 per cent of consumers surveyed believed that business conditions were good, a significant drop from 18.5 per cent in the previous quarter.
Anderson highlighted the drastic shift in consumer sentiment, noting that in the first quarter of 2023, 20.4 per cent of consumers viewed current business conditions positively. However, this number has now plummeted to just 10.3 per cent in 2024. Despite this decline, 27.8 per cent of consumers still expect business conditions to improve in the next twelve months.
Factors contributing to consumer pessimism include the high cost of living, lack of employment opportunities, crime rates, and insufficient government assistance. However, Anderson noted that there has been no change in how consumers perceive the current job situation in the country, with only 10 per cent believing that jobs are plentiful.
On the other hand, business confidence has remained stable over the last two quarters, with Anderson revealing that the index has maintained a consistent position since the end of 2023. Despite the challenges faced by consumers, there are signs of optimism in the economy, including increased entrepreneurship and new investments. The survey results indicate a complex landscape of both concerns and potential opportunities for the business sector moving forward.
