A recent consumer survey conducted by U.S. News & World Report’s 360 Reviews has revealed some surprising findings about Americans’ internet habits. The survey of 2,500 U.S. adult consumers found that more than one in three Americans do not know the internet speed they are paying for, and many are making do with the bare minimum speed.

According to Erica Beimesche, senior editor of Home Services at 360 Reviews, Gen X Americans typically have the fastest internet speeds, while Baby Boomers tend to have the slowest. This disparity could be leaving older Americans behind, especially since the Federal Communications Commission now recommends a minimum download speed of 100 Mbps for broadband capability.

Some other highlights from the survey include the average cost of a U.S. internet bill, which is $89 per month. New Jersey has the highest average monthly internet bill at $126, as well as the highest average increase from the advertised sign-up cost. On the other hand, Montana has the lowest average monthly internet bill at $70.

Despite these disparities, most U.S. consumers (75%) report that their internet service is reliable, with South Carolinians having the most reliable internet service.
