Contemplating the Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Global Development

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is set to revolutionize development practices in developing countries, according to Laurel Miller, President and CEO of The Asia Foundation. In a keynote address at the 2023 Australasian AID Conference dinner, Miller highlighted the potential benefits and risks associated with the widespread adoption of AI.

Miller emphasized that AI’s generative models, such as ChatGPT, have the ability to create novel content, presenting new opportunities for addressing issues of inequality, fragility, weak governance, and violence in developing countries. However, she also warned of the potential negative implications of AI, including exacerbating existing inequalities, data privacy concerns, and the threat of automation on traditional employment.

The impact of AI on the future of work is a significant concern, as automation could lead to job displacement in certain sectors. Additionally, the intentional use of AI for malign purposes, such as spreading disinformation, poses a threat to public trust and stability.

Despite the potential risks, Miller acknowledged the immense potential of AI to address pressing development challenges, such as poverty, climate change, and gender inequality. She stressed the importance of developing ethical safeguards and regulatory measures to ensure that AI benefits are distributed equitably and responsibly.

As the development community grapples with the implications of AI, Miller called for increased dialogue, collaboration, and capacity-building efforts to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by this rapidly evolving technology. Ultimately, she urged caution and thoughtful consideration in leveraging AI to address development challenges, emphasizing the need for ethical practices and responsible governance in the use of AI tools.
