Contestants Walk the ‘Turquoise Carpet’ as Eurovision 2024 Kicks Off in Malmo

The Eurovision Song Contest 2024 kicked off in Malmo, Sweden, with 37 contenders gracing the “Turquoise Carpet” amidst tight security and calls for boycotts due to Israel’s participation. The event, known for its non-political stance, is being held against the backdrop of the recent Israeli military campaign in Gaza.

All eyes are on Israeli contestant Eden Golan, set to perform her song “Hurricane” in the upcoming semi-final. Despite controversy surrounding Israel’s participation, bookmakers have placed Golan’s entry among the top 10 to win the competition.

The Israeli delegation did not attend the carpet event on Sunday, as it coincided with Holocaust Memorial Day in Israel. Israel also agreed to modify the lyrics of its original song, “October Rain,” which referenced the recent conflict with Hamas.

With half a dozen countries vying for the title this year, fans and bookmakers are eagerly anticipating the outcome of the contest. Sweden, the reigning champion from 2023, automatically secured a spot in the final, along with the “Big Five” countries – the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy.

This marks the seventh time Sweden is hosting the Eurovision Song Contest, with Malmo hosting for the third time. Swedish participants Marcus & Martinus are set to open the final with their dance-pop song “Unforgettable.” Stay tuned for more updates on this year’s Eurovision extravaganza.
