The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra has taken swift action following controversial online comments made by two of its members, clarinettist Slavko Popovic and oboist Alex Klein. The orchestra confirmed the removal of both musicians after an independent third-party investigation.

In a statement to CTV News, CPO President and CEO Marc Stevens emphasized that the decision was made for the morale, safety, and health of the organization. The orchestra’s code of conduct was cited as the basis for the investigation, which led to the dismissal of Popovic and Klein.

The controversy surrounding Popovic dates back to 2020 when anonymous allegations of racist and misogynistic language were made against him on social media. The investigation at that time found Popovic guilty of using such language, which he admitted to. It remains unclear what led to Klein’s dismissal from the orchestra.

The issue of inappropriate behavior within the classical music industry has been highlighted by American oboist Katherine Needleman, who has documented instances of misconduct by symphony orchestra members. Needleman suggests that the classical music world may be lagging behind in addressing such behavior due to its traditional nature.

The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s decisive action in response to the online comments underscores a commitment to maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment for all members. The orchestra’s decision to remove Popovic and Klein sends a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated within the organization.
