Corinne Fleischer of WFP warns of unprecedented rise in global hunger

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Humanitarian agencies are facing a dire situation as they struggle to respond to the world’s multiple crises, leading to a rise in malnutrition and hunger. Corinne Fleischer, the World Food Programme’s regional director for the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe, highlighted the challenges faced by aid organizations in a recent interview in Dubai.

Fleischer pointed out that conflicts, the impact of COVID-19, and the Ukraine war have all contributed to the current crisis. As a result, the humanitarian system is under immense pressure, with limited resources to meet the growing needs of vulnerable populations.

To address the urgent situation, the World Food Programme has received additional financial assistance from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief). KSrelief has pledged $10 million for operations in Ukraine, $5 million for Palestine, $4.85 million for Yemen, and $1.4 million for Sudan and South Sudan. The focus of these contributions is on saving lives and providing nutrition to mothers, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children under two.

One of the areas in urgent need of assistance is Gaza, where the population has been brought to the brink of famine after months under Israeli siege. Fleischer highlighted the rapid increase in hunger, with 50 percent of the population now facing starvation. The situation has worsened significantly since the start of the conflict, with malnutrition rates skyrocketing among children.

Despite the challenges, the World Food Programme continues to deliver aid to Gaza, albeit with limited resources. The organization is calling on Israel to open more crossing points to allow for the smooth flow of humanitarian aid into the enclave. Fleischer emphasized the importance of sustained aid delivery to prevent further suffering among the population.

In addition to Gaza, other regions in the Middle East are also facing food insecurity and malnutrition. Funding constraints have forced the World Food Programme to reduce assistance to vulnerable populations in countries like Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. The situation is particularly dire in Syria, where the agency has had to cut aid to millions of people due to lack of funding.

Fleischer stressed the importance of continued support from the international community to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in the region. She highlighted the need for sustainable solutions to address the root causes of food insecurity and malnutrition, including restoring local businesses and ensuring access to essential resources.

As the world grapples with multiple crises, humanitarian agencies like the World Food Programme play a crucial role in providing lifesaving assistance to those in need. However, without adequate funding and support, the ability to respond to emergencies and prevent further suffering is severely compromised. The international community must step up its efforts to address the growing humanitarian challenges and ensure that no one is left behind in times of crisis.
