In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the McLean boys’ soccer team fell just short of clinching their first state title in 26 years after a devastating 2-1 loss to undefeated Cosby in the Virginia Class 6 championship game.
The Highlanders, known for their resilience and fighting spirit, found themselves trailing after Cosby senior Evan Gaines scored just before halftime. However, they refused to back down and managed to equalize in the second half when junior Ada Karatepe’s shot deflected off a defender and found the back of the net.
The game remained deadlocked through two overtime periods, but Cosby ultimately secured the victory with a stunning golden goal from senior Deniss Hayes, leaving the Highlanders crushed on the field.
Despite the heartbreaking defeat, McLean coach Leland Jameson praised his team’s unwavering determination and spirit, highlighting their ability to come back from adversity throughout the season.
The loss marked only the third defeat of the season for the Highlanders, who had avenged their previous losses to Herndon with a victory in the regional championship game. While the defeat stung, Jameson expressed confidence that the experience would fuel his team’s drive to return stronger next season.
As the players picked themselves up from the disappointment, the pain of defeat served as a reminder of their unfinished business and a source of motivation for the future. The Highlanders may have fallen short this time, but they are determined to come back stronger and chase their championship dreams once again.
