Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team entered Saturday with high hopes of a national title, but those dreams were dashed in a heartbreaking defeat to No. 16 Tennessee in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The Cowgirls, who had a perfect 29-0 record and were ranked No. 1 in the country, suffered their first loss of the season in a 4-2 defeat at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater.
Despite a valiant effort from Ayumi Miyamoto and Anastasiya Komar, who fought hard in their singles matches, the Cowgirls were unable to overcome the deficit and fell short of advancing to the Elite Eight. Komar’s loss in a tiebreaker sealed Tennessee’s victory and ended OSU’s undefeated season.
Although the loss was a tough pill to swallow, head coach Chris Young praised his team for their remarkable season, which included a consistent No. 1 ranking and an ITA indoor championship. While the disappointment of missing out on a national championship will linger, the Cowgirls can take pride in their accomplishments and use this season as motivation for the future.
