Coyotes Officially Relocating to Salt Lake City After Sale Approval by Utah Jazz Owners

The Arizona Coyotes are set to make a major move as the NHL Board of Governors voted unanimously to approve a $1.2 billion sale of the team to Utah Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith. This decision paves the way for the Coyotes to relocate to Salt Lake City starting next season.

The deal includes a provision for Arizona to receive an expansion team if a new arena is constructed within the next five years. The sale will be facilitated through the NHL, with a $200 million relocation fee going to league owners.

Ryan Smith expressed his excitement about bringing hockey to Utah, stating, “We really believe Utah can be an incredible hockey town.” He plans to take over the franchise’s hockey operations, while current owner Alex Meruelo will focus on securing a new arena in north Phoenix.

Meruelo will retain ownership of the Tucson Roadrunners, the Coyotes’ AHL affiliate, and hopes to move them to Mullett Arena, the team’s temporary home shared with Arizona State University. He plans to pay back the $1 billion once an expansion team is approved.

Despite the move, Meruelo remains committed to the Arizona community and building a first-class sports arena without public financial support. The Coyotes played their final game in Arizona with a 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers, marking the end of an era for the team in the state.
