Creators are calling for social impact stories

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A group of influential figures in the film and television industry, including George Clooney, Ava DuVernay, Matt Damon, and Kerry Washington, have come together to advocate for more social impact storytelling in Hollywood. This call to action comes in the wake of the closure of Participant Media, known for backing impactful films like “Spotlight,” “Roma,” and “An Inconvenient Truth.”

In an open letter addressed to the entertainment industry, the group of 118 signatories emphasized the importance of values-based storytelling in today’s world. They highlighted the need to engage audiences in diverse experiences and human complexities through thought-provoking narratives. The letter also praised Participant Media for its pioneering work in combining storytelling with social change, earning critical acclaim and numerous awards over its 20-year history.

Participant Media’s founder, Jeff Skoll, recently announced the company’s closure, leaving a void in the industry for socially conscious filmmaking. The letter acknowledges Participant’s significant impact on public discourse and culture, urging Hollywood to continue the legacy of producing films that inspire change and promote empathy.

The signatories, which include prominent advocates and filmmakers, expressed their gratitude for Participant’s contributions and pledged to support the next generation of producers in creating impactful stories. They emphasized the role of storytelling in shaping the future and called on the industry to embrace values-driven narratives that resonate with audiences and drive social progress.

As Hollywood faces challenges and uncertainties, the call for more social impact films remains strong. The letter serves as a reminder of the power of storytelling to effect change and calls on the industry to uphold the legacy of Participant Media by championing meaningful narratives that inspire hope and humanity.
