The Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) celebrated its 35th anniversary with a week-long event in St Clair, Port of Spain. Secretary General Rodney Taylor opened the festivities with a speech highlighting the evolution of telecommunications in the region since the CTU’s establishment in 1989.

Back then, the Caribbean telecommunications landscape was dominated by state-owned monopolies, limited competition, and outdated infrastructure. Basic voice communication was the focus, with limited access to advanced technologies like mobile networks and broadband internet.

Over the years, technological advancements, regulatory reforms, and increased investment have transformed the sector. Today, the Caribbean offers a wide range of services, including mobile, internet, digital TV, and value-added services like mobile banking and e-commerce.

Mobile technology has revolutionized communication, with high penetration rates and expanded coverage to rural areas. Broadband internet access has improved, enabling online services, video streaming, and cloud computing.

The CTU has played a pivotal role in promoting collaboration and coordination in the telecommunications sector. Efforts towards regional integration aim to create a unified digital market and enhance ICT services across borders.

Looking ahead, the CTU is focused on reducing roaming charges within CARICOM, harmonizing ICT regulations, and advocating for digital transformation. Partnerships with international organizations and stakeholders will drive innovation and connectivity in the region.

As the CTU celebrates 35 years of technological leadership, Secretary General Taylor called on supporters to believe in the organization’s mission of advancing ICT development in the Caribbean. With continued collaboration and innovation, the region is poised for further growth and connectivity in the digital age.
