CW Executives Discussing Original Movies and Potential Sports Rights Deals

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The CW network is shaking things up with a new lineup of original TV movies set to air on Sunday nights later this year. In an interview with Variety, network president Dennis Miller and president of entertainment Brad Schwartz revealed that The CW will be producing as many as ten original films in addition to their current movie block.

Schwartz described the new movies as “much like a Hallmark type thing” and hinted that some of them may be themed around holidays like Christmas. The network is also in talks with a TV movie production company to handle the output, as well as planning more installments of their popular “I Am…” series of bio docs.

In addition to the movie news, Schwartz addressed the fates of current shows like “Walker,” “All American,” and “All American: Homecoming,” which were not mentioned in the new schedule. He explained that the network is shifting to a year-round development cycle and will make decisions on these shows soon.

The CW is also expanding its sports offerings, with recent deals with leagues like LIV Golf, the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and ACC Football. Miller hinted at more sports rights deals to come, saying that the network has available real estate for new programming.

Overall, The CW is seeing a positive financial outlook, with losses down to $52 million from nearly $100 million when Nexstar first acquired the network. Miller expressed confidence in further reducing costs and aiming for profitability in the near future. Stay tuned for more updates on The CW’s evolving lineup and exciting new developments.
