Czech Republic marks 20 years of being a member of the European Union

The Czech Republic marked 20 years of EU membership with a grand event at Prague Castle, where key EU figures expressed unwavering support for Ukraine and emphasized the importance of unity within the continent.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala reiterated the Czech Republic’s backing for the EU enlargement to include countries like Ukraine and Moldova, stressing the need for transparency and adherence to rules. President Petr Pavel highlighted the EU’s foundation of mutual respect and shared interests, emphasizing the significance of EU and NATO membership for freedom, prosperity, and security.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier underscored the collective response of European states to threats against the union, affirming Ukraine’s integral part in Europe. He emphasized the importance of standing together and not allowing division to weaken the continent.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a heartfelt video message, expressed his aspiration for Ukraine to join the European family, following the footsteps of Czechia. Ukraine’s recent application for EU membership and the ongoing accession negotiations were also discussed during the event.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen commended the Czech military industry for its crucial support to Ukraine in the face of Russia’s aggression. She highlighted the delivery of essential military capabilities to Ukraine, enabling the country to defend itself against the ongoing invasion.

The event at Prague Castle served as a platform to reaffirm the EU’s commitment to unity, support for Ukraine, and the shared vision of a strong and cohesive Europe.
