Daniel Cormier Excited for Nick Diaz’s Return, Expresses Concern About Vicente Luque Matchup

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Nick Diaz, the eldest of the Diaz brothers, is making a comeback to the UFC once again. Despite being semi-retired since his loss to Georges St-Pierre in 2013, Diaz has accepted a fight against Vicente Luque, the No. 14-ranked welterweight contender, at UFC Saudi Arabia on August 3.

At 40 years old, Diaz has not won a fight in 13 years and is coming off a concerning performance against Robbie Lawler in September 2021. Despite this, UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier expressed excitement about Diaz’s return, acknowledging the significance of seeing a fighter who has meant so much to the sport.

However, Cormier also expressed concerns about the matchup, noting that Luque poses a more dangerous challenge for Diaz compared to Lawler. He suggested that a fight between Diaz and Tony Ferguson, who is also scheduled to fight at the event, would make more sense given their similar career stages.

Ferguson, who is facing Michael Chiesa at the event, is looking to end his record seven-fight losing streak. Many in the MMA community have called for Ferguson’s retirement, but a win at UFC Saudi Arabia could potentially change the narrative.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding Diaz and Ferguson’s fights, Cormier believes that every great champion has one last night of glory left in them. Whether Diaz and Ferguson can seize that opportunity remains to be seen, but their presence on the same card adds an element of intrigue for fans.
