Darius Lawton: Sports Studies and News Services

Darius Lawton, a senior at East Carolina University, is making waves in the College of Health and Human Performance with his dedication to sports studies and his passion for giving back to the community. Originally from Norfolk, Virginia, Lawton has found a second home at ECU, where he has excelled both academically and personally.

Lawton’s journey at ECU began during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Despite the uncertainty, Lawton pushed himself to meet new people and get involved in various activities and programs on campus. His hard work and determination have paid off, as he is set to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in sports studies.

One of Lawton’s most memorable experiences at ECU was volunteering at Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas. This opportunity allowed him to combine his love for sports with his desire to make a difference in the community. Additionally, Lawton has been involved in research projects focused on physical activity and life expectancy among Black former collegiate athletes, inspired by the passing of his father in 2016.

Looking ahead, Lawton plans to continue his education at ECU by pursuing a graduate degree in sport exercise and psychology. His goal is to understand the psychological aspects of athletic performance and how individuals respond to pressure in competitive settings. Lawton’s passion for sports psychology has been fueled by his experiences at ECU, particularly his involvement in the TEAM-OPPS Research Lab.

As Lawton prepares to graduate and embark on the next chapter of his academic journey, he remains committed to giving back to the Black community and using his knowledge to make a positive impact. With his drive and determination, Lawton is sure to continue making a difference in the world of sports and beyond.
