Data reveals that violence against German politicians has nearly doubled in the span of five years

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The campaign for the European elections in Germany has been marred by a disturbing trend of violence against politicians. Recent statistics show that attacks on Green politicians have nearly tripled in the past five years, while violence against AfD politicians has decreased by around 20%. Despite this decrease, AfD politicians remain the most common targets of violence.

One such incident involved Social Democrat politician Matthias Ecke, who was hospitalized after being beaten up while hanging campaign posters. Green politician Yvonne Mosler also faced threats and aggression while campaigning, prompting her to call for more security measures.

Mosler highlighted the changing attitude towards politicians, noting an increase in verbal assaults and threats. She expressed concern over the impact of violence on the democratic process, citing instances of property damage and destruction of campaign posters in her constituency.

On the other hand, AfD MP Beatrix von Storch emphasized that violence against AfD members is a daily occurrence and often goes unnoticed or accepted. She stressed the importance of addressing violence against politicians regardless of their political views, as it poses a threat to democracy.

The rise in attacks on politicians, particularly Green and AfD members, has raised concerns about the safety of candidates and the integrity of the electoral process. As the European elections draw near, the need to address and prevent such violence becomes increasingly urgent.
