American comedian Dave Chappelle made headlines during his performance in Abu Dhabi, where he referred to the Israeli war on Hamas in Gaza as a “genocide.” The audience cheered as Chappelle urged Americans to combat antisemitism to ensure that Jews do not feel the need to rely on Israel for protection.
Despite Abu Dhabi’s diplomatic relations with Israel, Chappelle’s comments come at a time when the Emirati capital has increasingly criticized Israel’s actions in the ongoing conflict. Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have been widespread across the Middle East, but speech and protests are tightly controlled in the Emirates.
During his performance, Chappelle, a Muslim, initially hesitated to discuss the war but was encouraged by a woman in the audience who shouted “Free Palestine!” This led Chappelle to label the conflict as a “genocide” and emphasized the importance of making Jews feel safe in America to reduce their reliance on Israel for protection.
The diverse crowd at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi displayed a range of reactions, from cheers to boos. Chappelle’s mention of President Joe Biden’s support for Israel drew widespread disapproval, while references to Donald Trump garnered scattered cheers.
While Chappelle’s set included racy jokes and swearing, he avoided delving into local politics, with the exception of a sly joke about the UAE’s surveillance network and a deadpan comment on the country’s stance on homosexuality. The comedian even made a symbolic gesture by appearing on stage with a falcon, a national symbol of the UAE.
Chappelle, known for his sharp wit and humor, won the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2019 and was a highlight of the Abu Dhabi Comedy Week.
