In the days when we crapped in a bucket in the garden, it was impossible to imagine showers with sensors and voice control. Advances in technology over the last hundred years have provided incalculable benefits for our way of life. Until 1926, our fastest means of travel was on horseback, but now we have trains, planes, and even spacecraft.
A hundred and twenty years ago, many houses still had no running water or flushing lavatories. People had to fetch water from a pump and use a bucket as a lavatory, which was collected weekly for disposal. Now, water filters can remove impurities, showers can be controlled digitally, and toilets flush automatically with sensors.
Back then, heating was provided by fires and hot water bottles, and lighting came from gas lamps or candles. Today, we have electricity to power our devices and computers to make calculations. Telephones were once a luxury, but now we have smartphones that fit in our pockets and can do so much more.
Looking ahead, who knows what innovations the future holds? Flying cars, weather control, disease cures – the possibilities are endless. Just as our ancestors couldn’t imagine the technology we have today, we can only speculate about what the future may bring. One thing is certain: the pace of technological advancement shows no signs of slowing down.
