Dawn Staley Named AP Women’s College Basketball Coach of the Year for Second Time

Dawn Staley, the head coach of the South Carolina women’s basketball team, has been named the Associated Press women’s college basketball Coach of the Year for the second time in her career. Staley, who previously won the award in 2020, received 27 out of 35 votes from the national media panel that votes on the AP Top 25 each week.

Staley’s coaching prowess was on full display this season as she guided a young South Carolina team back to the Final Four with an undefeated record for the second straight year. The Gamecocks are set to face North Carolina State in the national semifinal on Friday night and are the overwhelming favorite to win their second title in three years.

Staley has built a powerhouse program at South Carolina since taking over in 2008, leading the team to three NCAA titles since 2017. Despite having to replace her entire starting lineup this season, Staley managed to guide the team back to the semifinals for the fourth consecutive year.

Off the court, Staley has become a voice of leadership and direction in the women’s game, championing issues of gender equity, diversity, and opportunities for women. She has also been a staunch supporter of her players, speaking out against unfair stereotypes and advocating for respect and recognition based on merit rather than race.

Staley’s impact on the game goes beyond wins and losses, as she continues to inspire and empower her players both on and off the court. Her success and influence have solidified her place as one of the most respected and admired coaches in women’s college basketball.
