The 2024 Dushanbe Grand Slam continued to showcase the best of judo as champions from around the world gathered to compete in the prestigious event. The second day of the competition was marked by not only fierce competition but also the universal values of respect and courtesy that judo promotes worldwide.
In the presence of Dushanbe Mayor Mr Rustam EMOMALI and Tajikistan Judo Federation President Mr Ismoil MAHMADZOIR, the grand slam was officially opened by Mr Vlad Marinescu, Director General of the International Judo Federation. The atmosphere was electric as fans within the stadium and beyond its walls witnessed the pinnacle of judo and experienced the fervor of the event.
One of the highlights of the day was the final match in the -63kg category, where Lubjana PIOVESANA faced off against Dali LILUASHVILI. PIOVESANA scored an early waza-ari and confidently held off LILUASHVILI to take home the gold medal. Reigning world champion Nils STUMP also showed his form by securing victory in his match against home favorite Behruzi KHOJAZODA.
In the -70kg category, Michaela POLLERES impressed with two waza-aris to earn her third grand slam gold, while in the -81kg category, Yoshito HOJO emerged victorious after holding down his opponent Wachid BORCHASHVILI for the gold.
The event was a true celebration of the sport of judo, with new contracts signed to ensure Dushanbe’s presence on the international stage for years to come. The champions inspired the next generation of judo athletes, and the crowd’s support added to the excitement of the competition.
