Dayton school board unexpectedly votes to change DPS business manager, surprising two members

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a surprising turn of events, the current interim business manager of the school district, Tiffany Powell, will not be continuing in her role. Powell has been serving as the interim business manager since last summer, when former business manager David Lawrence was hired as the interim superintendent. The business manager is responsible for overseeing busing, maintenance, and other similar tasks within the district.

The decision to replace Powell was made by board member Eric Walker, who stated that the change in leadership was necessary to ensure the continued progress and success of the district. Walker announced that Dr. Jones, a former principal and superintendent with a wealth of experience in education, will be taking over the role starting on June 1, after Powell’s contract expires.

Despite the board’s decision, two members, Karen Wick-Gagnet and Jocelyn Rhynard, abstained from the vote on hiring Jones. They expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of communication and discussion about the change prior to the nomination. Wick-Gagnet publicly apologized to Powell for the oversight and lack of consideration in handling the situation.

The board’s decision to replace Powell with Dr. Jones has sparked controversy and raised questions about the transparency and communication within the district’s leadership. However, supporters of Jones believe that his experience and temperament make him a valuable asset in achieving the district’s goals in collaboration with the superintendent and treasurer.
