Decorated ‘Hero Of Ukraine’ Learns To Live With Bionic Arms

Valeriy Kucherenko, a decorated “Hero of Ukraine,” is facing a new battle – learning how to eat and use the toilet independently with his bionic arms. The 30-year-old double amputee was seriously injured in October, losing his limbs while leading troops in the war-torn eastern Lugansk region.

As more Ukrainian soldiers like Kucherenko lose limbs in the ongoing conflict, they are forced to adjust to life in a country with limited disabled facilities. The Protez Foundation, a US non-profit, stepped in to fit Kucherenko with bionic prosthetic arms made by a Ukrainian startup called Esper.

Despite the challenges, Kucherenko remains determined to adapt to his new reality. His wife, Veronika, supports him through the process, acknowledging the progress he has made with tasks like eating on his own. However, going to the toilet independently remains a significant hurdle for Kucherenko.

With a waiting list of 1,600 soldiers in need of prosthetics, the Protez Foundation provides hope and support to amputees like Kucherenko. Despite the difficulties ahead, Kucherenko remains optimistic about his future, planning to return as a military instructor to continue serving his country.

As he navigates the learning curve of using his bionic arms, Kucherenko’s determination and resilience serve as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges. His story highlights the strength and courage of Ukrainian soldiers who continue to fight for their country’s freedom, even in the face of adversity.
