Delaware Schools Partner with Lions Club to Provide Diabetes Training

Delaware schools are taking proactive steps to support students with diabetes by partnering with the Lions Club to provide specialized training for school nurses, staff, and parents. With over 300 students in the Delaware school system living with Type 1 diabetes, the need for education and awareness is crucial.

Aimee Hastings, a nurse facilitator for the Delaware Diabetes Coalition, spearheaded the initiative after her own son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes during his high school years. Recognizing the challenges faced by students with diabetes, Hastings worked with the Lions Club District 22 and the Delaware Department of Education to secure funding for a comprehensive training program.

The program, titled “Lions Empowering School Nurses for Children with Diabetes: A Delaware Partnership,” offers three levels of diabetes training for school personnel and parents. From six-hour certificate-eligible training for school nurses to 30-minute optional training for non-nursing staff, the program aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to support students with diabetes effectively.

John Monahan, the Lions District 22-D diabetes chair, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the Lions Club’s commitment to supporting causes like diabetes awareness. Sara Bluhm, executive director of the Delaware Diabetes Coalition, emphasized the importance of the program in improving the lives of students with diabetes and providing valuable resources to school staff.

The program’s inclusive approach, which extends training to all school community members, underscores the collaborative effort needed to ensure the safety and well-being of students with diabetes. By staying current with the latest technology and treatment options, the program aims to empower school personnel to effectively manage students’ diabetes needs.
