Demand for older Apple iPhone models surges in UAE market as shoppers look for more affordable choices

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The tech gadget market in the UAE is currently experiencing a surge in the availability and promotion of slightly older iPhone models, ranging from the iPhone 11 to the iPhone 14. With the imminent arrival of the new AI-enabled iPad next week, shoppers are being presented with a plethora of options when it comes to upgrading their smartphones.

Retailers are aggressively promoting these older iPhone models on online channels, targeting consumers who are looking for a smartphone upgrade but are not willing to splurge on the latest iPhone 15. The price difference between the older models and the latest version can be as high as 20-30%, depending on the retailer and the specific model.

In response to the influx of older iPhone models in the market, there has also been a drop in prices for the latest smartphones, with discounts ranging from 10-15% as tech retailers aim to stimulate consumer demand.

Rajat Asthana, Chief Operating Officer at Eros Group, highlighted that the global shipments of mobile phones increased by 8% in Q1-2024, leading to overstocking and subsequent price drops in the market. Both Apple and Samsung have ample supplies of their flagship phones, resulting in retailers in the UAE reducing prices to clear inventory.

Despite the overall sluggishness in the UAE smartphone and gadget market, the recently introduced Samsung Galaxy S24 has been a standout performer, with a 10-12% drop in prices observed. The model, known for its extensive AI-enabled features, has garnered significant consumer interest.

Saleem Jaaved, Managing Director of Touch Tel, noted that there are two types of smartphone buyers in the UAE currently – those willing to pay a premium for the latest AI-enabled smartphones and those seeking a smartphone upgrade without opting for the latest model. This trend has propelled the popularity of older iPhone models in the UAE and Gulf markets.

The upcoming launch of the new iPad from Apple has generated considerable excitement in the market, with tech analysts praising the device’s AI enhancements. The new iPad is set to be available in the UAE from May 15, with prices starting at Dh5,499 for the 13-inch iPad Pro and Dh4,199 for the 11-inch Pro. Asthana expressed confidence that the upgraded tablets from Apple will help maintain the brand’s lead in the UAE market.

As the tech gadget market in the UAE continues to evolve, consumers have a wide array of options to choose from, whether they are looking for the latest AI-enabled devices or seeking a more budget-friendly smartphone upgrade. With competitive pricing and innovative features, the market is poised for further growth and innovation in the coming months.
