DEME, a leading offshore contractor, has secured two major contracts from Prysmian, a cable solutions provider, for the engineering and installation of the IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 offshore grid systems in the Netherlands. The combined value of the contracts exceeds $315 million, making it the largest cabling award in DEME’s history.

This project marks DEME’s first venture into Prysmian’s 525 kV HVDC cable technology, which offers increased transmission capacity. The scope of the contracts includes cable installation, landfall and rock placement, dredging, and infrastructure works.

The project involves the installation of two 12-km long 525 kV HVDC cable systems within the lake Veerse Meer and 126 km of 525 kV HVDC cable system offshore. DEME will also undertake preparation and supporting works for both projects, including route preparation, surveys, landfalls, and rock placement.

DEME will utilize a variety of vessels from its fleet, such as cable installation vessels, hopper dredgers, and a fallpipe vessel. The project will also cover beach works and cofferdam structures at the cable landing locations.

Scheduled to commence in stages from 2025, the IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 projects are offshore grid connection systems operated by TenneT. These systems will connect two future offshore wind farms in the Dutch North Sea to the province of Zeeland, with the first connection expected to be operational in 2029 and the second in 2030.

Philip Scheers, Business Unit Director at DEME Offshore, expressed pride in collaborating with Prysmian on this groundbreaking project, which will ultimately deliver 4 GW of clean energy to the Netherlands.
