CANNES, France – Demi Moore stunned audiences at the Cannes Film Festival with her raw and vulnerable performance in the body horror film “The Substance.” The movie, which premiered on Sunday, showcases Moore in a demanding role that pushed her to new limits.

In the film, Moore plays Elisabeth, an aging TV fitness instructor who undergoes a mysterious medical treatment called The Substance to become the perfect version of herself. The role required Moore, 61, to be completely naked and undergo a transformation into a deteriorating old woman through prosthetics.

Speaking to Reuters, Moore shared that the role demanded a high level of vulnerability on both emotional and physical levels. She described the experience as challenging yet exciting, pushing her out of her comfort zone.

Critics have praised Moore’s performance, with Variety calling it “nothing short of fearless” and The Hollywood Reporter commending her portrayal of a character filled with visceral desperation.

For co-star Margaret Qualley, playing the so-called perfect version of a woman’s body was a strange experience. Qualley, 29, noted that her character, despite being meant to be perfect, was actually one of the least beautiful characters she had ever played due to her heartless nature.

Director Coralie Fargeat aimed to explore women’s toxic relationships with their bodies and the societal pressures tied to appearance. Fargeat’s film delves into how women perceive their bodies and the impact of societal standards on self-worth.

“The Substance” marks Moore’s return to the Cannes Film Festival after more than 25 years, showcasing her versatility and dedication to her craft. The film’s powerful performances and thought-provoking themes have captivated audiences and critics alike at this year’s festival.
