Tech for Campaigns, a Democratic organization comprised of tech industry workers, is ramping up its efforts to influence state elections by expanding its focus to six states where Republicans hold strong majorities in state legislatures.
Jessica Alter, the co-founder and chair of the organization, revealed in an interview that Tech for Campaigns will be allocating resources to support state legislative candidates in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas. This move is part of a new initiative called “Next Ten,” which aims to target Republican-dominated state capitals where Democrats have the potential to flip control of the state legislature within the next decade.
With a membership of 17,000 tech workers primarily based in coastal cities like San Francisco and New York, Tech for Campaigns is utilizing artificial intelligence to assist in creating ads and fundraising emails for state legislative races. This innovative approach allows them to maximize their resources and reach a broader audience.
The organization’s proactive stance in supporting Democratic candidates in overlooked regions where other organizations have failed to invest has garnered praise. In contrast, many conservative tech personalities have distanced themselves from the 2024 election, while Republican groups are also leveraging artificial intelligence technology in their election efforts.
The stakes are high as state lawmakers grapple with critical issues such as abortion, election administration, and LGBTQ rights. Tech for Campaigns’ strategic approach and commitment to supporting state legislative candidates could potentially tip the scales in favor of Democrats in states like Texas, where pickup opportunities exist.
By providing tangible support in the form of funding, volunteers, and communications assistance, Tech for Campaigns is making a significant impact in state legislative races where outside help is often scarce. With a budget of $10 million to $14 million for the 2024 campaign cycle, the organization is poised to make a substantial difference in shaping the political landscape at the state level.
