Democrats Vow to Protect Speaker Mike Johnson’s Position if Republicans Attempt to Remove Him

Reading Time: < 1 minute

House Democrats have pledged to support Republican Speaker Mike Johnson in a vote to save his job, should some of his fellow GOP lawmakers attempt to remove him from his position. This move comes after Johnson faced criticism from some Republicans for advancing aid for Ukraine as part of a $95 billion emergency spending package.

The top three House Democrats, Reps. Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark, and Pete Aguilar, released a statement affirming their support for Johnson and stating their intention to vote against any motion to remove him from the speakership. This decision effectively shuts down any potential efforts by Republicans to oust Johnson.

Despite the show of support from Democrats, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, along with Reps. Thomas Massie and Paul Gosar, had previously filed a resolution to remove Johnson from office. Greene indicated that she may still pursue this effort in the future, emphasizing the importance of recorded votes to hold Congress accountable.

Meanwhile, House Republicans are focused on uniting the party ahead of the November elections. During a closed-door session, they discussed strategies to create cohesion within the party, with an emphasis on aligning with former President Donald Trump’s goal of a unified Republican majority.

As the political drama unfolds in the House, the future of Speaker Johnson’s leadership remains uncertain, with tensions running high between different factions within the GOP. Stay tuned for further developments on this story.
