Deseret News: Salt Lake Community College’s New President Revealed

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Gregory F. Peterson, the current president of Chandler-Gilbert Community College, has been appointed as the next president of Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). The Utah Board of Higher Education unanimously voted to approve Peterson’s appointment after interviewing three finalists on SLCC’s Taylorsville Redwood campus.

Peterson is known for his leadership in student learning and success, implementing innovative programs, and launching the first community college artificial intelligence program in the nation. He holds a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Texas at Austin and has a strong commitment to the community college mission of access and success for all students.

Sporting SLCC’s school colors in a bright blue shirt and yellow and blue striped tie, Peterson expressed his excitement about joining the SLCC community. He praised the faculty and staff of SLCC and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the institution following the retirement of longtime president Deneece Huftalin.

SLCC is Utah’s largest two-year college, serving a diverse student body across eight locations in the Salt Lake Valley and online. Peterson’s experience working with industry partners and community leaders to strengthen workforce pipelines aligns with SLCC’s mission of preparing students for family-sustaining careers.

As Peterson takes on his new role, he looks forward to building on the foundation laid by President Huftalin and continuing to support the success of SLCC students. The appointment marks a new chapter for SLCC as it prepares to welcome its new president and bid farewell to a respected leader in higher education.
