The UAE cricket team suffered a heartbreak in the Global T20 World Cup Qualifier semifinal as they lost to Sri Lanka by 15 runs in a thrilling encounter in Abu Dhabi. Despite a valiant effort, the UAE fell short of qualifying for the World Cup, with Sri Lanka and Scotland securing their spots in the tournament to be held in Bangladesh later this year.
The match was highlighted by UAE skipper Esha Oza’s exceptional performance, both with the bat and the ball. Esha’s all-round brilliance inspired her team as she scored a superb half-century and also picked up crucial wickets during Sri Lanka’s innings.
After being put into bat, Sri Lanka posted a competitive total of 149 for six in their 20 overs, thanks to Vishmi Gunaratne’s impressive knock of 45 runs. The UAE bowlers, led by Esha and Vaishnave Mahesh, did well to keep the Lankans in check and take wickets at regular intervals.
In their chase, the UAE got off to a shaky start as they lost their opening partner early. However, Esha’s aggressive batting kept the team in the hunt as she formed crucial partnerships with Khushi Sharma and Kavisha Egodage. Despite her valiant effort, Esha was dismissed at a crucial juncture, and the UAE eventually fell short of the target, finishing at 134 for seven.
This performance marked the UAE’s best showing in a Global World Cup Qualifier, showcasing the team’s growth and potential in international cricket. While the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup lingers, the team can take pride in their fighting spirit and determination.
