DEWA Partners with Parkin to Expand EV Charging Stations in Dubai

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has taken a significant step towards enhancing sustainability and promoting the use of electric vehicles (EVs) in the city by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Parkin, the largest supplier of paid public parking facilities in Dubai. The MoU aims to expand the number of EV ‘Green Charger’ stations in prime locations managed by Parkin, making it more convenient for EV owners to charge their vehicles.

The MoU was signed in the presence of HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, and Ahmed Bahrozyan, Chairman of Parkin. Waleed Bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence at DEWA, and Mohamed Abdulla Al Ali, CEO of Parkin, signed the agreement.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer highlighted the importance of sustainability and green mobility in the UAE, stating that the country is a pioneer in adopting initiatives that promote a sustainable green economy. The EV Green Charger initiative by DEWA supports the National Electric Vehicles Policy and the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, aiming to reduce carbon emissions in the transport sector.

The number of electric vehicles in Dubai has been steadily increasing, with over 30,000 vehicles registered by the end of April 2024. This growth reflects Dubai’s success in promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly transport options. The EV Green Charger initiative has also seen an increase in registered customers, with over 15,000 users by the end of March 2024.

The partnership between DEWA and Parkin aligns with the government’s efforts to enhance the EV infrastructure in Dubai and provide easy access to charging facilities using innovative technologies. This collaboration supports Dubai’s position as a global leader in urban planning and sustainable development, contributing to the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033 and the Dubai Social Agenda 33.

Ahmed Bahrozyan, Chairman of Parkin’s Board of Directors, emphasized the importance of the partnership in supporting Dubai’s Green Mobility Strategy 2030 and the city’s economic agenda. Parkin’s extensive parking network will play a crucial role in supporting the transition to EVs, offering easy access to charging services and incentivizing EV adoption.

Since 2015, DEWA’s EV Green Charger initiative has provided approximately 26,000 MWh of electricity for charging EVs in Dubai, powering a cumulative electric vehicle distance of approximately 130 million kilometers. DEWA also offers features to facilitate EV charging, including a guest mode for unregistered users and the ‘Dubai EV Community Hub’ website to promote EV uptake.

The partnership between DEWA and Parkin signifies a significant milestone in Dubai’s efforts to promote sustainable mobility and reduce carbon emissions in the transport sector. With the expansion of EV charging stations in prime locations managed by Parkin, EV owners in Dubai can look forward to a more convenient and efficient charging experience.
