Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has once again made headlines with its latest achievement at the Global Water Awards. The prestigious award ceremony recognized DEWA for its groundbreaking Smart Water Project of the Year, specifically for its innovative Hydro Insight system. This system, developed internally by DEWA, is a world-first for a water utility and utilizes cutting-edge AI and data science technologies for smart grid automation and management.

The Hydro Insight system allows DEWA to monitor over 1 million smart meters, providing improved visibility on various areas, including water meter anomalies. One of the most impressive features of this smart system is its ability to drastically reduce meter anomaly detection time from 30 days to just 1 hour. This efficiency has resulted in the conservation of a staggering 214 million gallons of water, showcasing the significant impact of DEWA’s technological advancements.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, expressed his delight at receiving such a prestigious international award, emphasizing the importance of this recognition for one of the world’s largest and most advanced infrastructure projects for smart water meters. Al Tayer highlighted DEWA’s commitment to following the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to achieve Dubai’s Integrated Water Resources Management Strategy 2030.

DEWA’s dedication to utilizing disruptive and Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies has positioned it as a global leader in water network management. With a focus on automation, efficiency, and reliability, DEWA has managed to significantly reduce water network losses to just 4.6%, a remarkable achievement compared to the 15% average in North America.

The installation of over 1 million smart water meters has been a key factor in DEWA’s success, serving as the backbone of their smart grid and driving digital transformation. These meters have not only enhanced operational efficiency but also contributed to substantial savings and the prevention of water wastage. DEWA’s staff has demonstrated exceptional capabilities in maintaining and monitoring the advanced infrastructure system, resulting in significant cost savings and the resolution of numerous meter malfunctions and overloads.

Abdullah Obaidullah, Executive Vice President of Water & Civil at DEWA, highlighted the innovative and automated systems developed by DEWA’s staff, which have led to impressive savings and the prevention of water wastage. DEWA’s proactive approach in notifying customers of internal water leakage has prevented the waste of billions of gallons of water, showcasing their commitment to sustainability and efficiency.

DEWA’s success at the Global Water Awards is a testament to their ongoing efforts to revolutionize water management through technology and innovation. As they continue to lead the way in smart grid automation and management, DEWA is setting a new standard for water utilities worldwide.
