Dharamshala tourism industry anticipates growth despite election slowdown due to IPL

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The tourism and hospitality industry in Dharamshala is gearing up for a much-needed boost as two Indian Premier League (IPL) matches are set to be played at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium.

Amidst the ongoing elections, the hotel occupancy in Dharamshala had been hovering around 30 to 40% in April, much lower than the usual numbers for this time of the year. However, with the Punjab Kings scheduled to play two matches against Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 5 and 9, the hoteliers are optimistic that the occupancy rates will soar to around 80%.

The anticipation is high among hoteliers, with advance bookings already reaching 60-65% and inquiries pouring in daily. The Dharamshala Hotel Association president, Ashwani Bamba, stated that they expect hotel occupancy to reach 90% in hotels closer to the stadium and 80% in those situated in upper areas during the match days.

The excitement is not limited to hoteliers, as tour and travel businesses are also expecting a surge in business during the IPL matches. Varun Thakur, president of the Dharamshala taxi union, mentioned that they are receiving inquiries and are hopeful for good business on the match days.

With the Punjab Kings team already in Dharamshala and Chennai Super Kings expected to arrive soon, the city is abuzz with anticipation and preparations for the upcoming IPL matches. The cricket fever is set to bring a much-needed economic boost to Dharamshala’s tourism industry amidst the election slowdown.
