In a groundbreaking move, the Dharavi Premier League (DPL) is set to kick off, bringing the excitement of T10 cricket to Asia’s largest slum. Organized by the Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL) in collaboration with the Government of Maharashtra and the Adani Group, the tournament aims to celebrate the spirit of the over one million residents of Dharavi.
The league, dubbed as Dharavikars’ ‘own IPL,’ was officially launched at the RPF Ground in Matunga West, marking the beginning of a three-day extravaganza. With 14 teams and over 200 players from Sector 1, the heart of Dharavi, the tournament promises fierce competition and thrilling matches.
Played in a 10-over format on a knockout basis, the matches will be held under floodlights at the RPF Ground in Dharavi, adhering to ICC rules for T20 cricket. The event will also feature live broadcasts on big LED screens and on DPL’s YouTube channel, allowing fans to catch all the action from the comfort of their homes.
Not only will the tournament showcase the cricketing talent of Dharavi’s youth, but it will also provide in-match entertainment, music, and food, all organized by the residents themselves. With cash prizes up for grabs, including awards for the man of the match and player of the series, the DPL is set to become an annual highlight for the community.
“We want to change the perception about Dharavi being Asia’s biggest slum. We want to give it a new identity,” said Vicky Gupta, one of the team captains. The overwhelming response to the tournament has already sparked plans for future editions, ensuring that the DPL becomes a staple in Dharavi’s sporting calendar.
